Euro-Office Desktop Client Launched with Nextcloud Spreadsheet Announcement
A European coalition including Nextcloud has released Euro-Office, a free open-source office suite, as a desktop client for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Euro-Office, an open-source alternative to Microsoft Office, is now available as a native desktop client alongside its web application, expanding accessibility for users. The suite, which incorporates OnlyOffice, is backed by a coalition including Nextcloud, IONOS, Proton, and others, aiming to provide a European-based office solution.
Nextcloud has announced Nextcloud Spreadsheet, a collaborative editor compatible with XLSX, XLS, and ODS formats, set to be integrated into Nextcloud Office and operate alongside Collabora Online from Nextcloud Hub 26 Spring. The spreadsheet software offers features like real-time co-editing, version history, and federated editing across multiple Nextcloud servers.
A recent integration between Nextcloud and the German email service Tuta allows for direct attachment storage and Nextcloud Talk integration, highlighting a broader trend of European institutions exploring open-source alternatives for digital sovereignty, though practical implementation faces challenges as demonstrated by a pilot project in Denmark.
