Nextcloud Server Installation on Windows Requires Workarounds
Native installation of Nextcloud Server on Windows is not supported, but users can run it through Docker, virtual machines, or a Linux VPS.
Nextcloud Server cannot be installed directly on Windows operating systems due to a lack of native support and compatibility issues with components like IIS and XAMPP. The Nextcloud project officially supports and tests the server only on Linux environments, making direct installation on Windows problematic and unsupported.
Users can still run Nextcloud on a Windows machine by utilizing Docker Desktop with the Nextcloud All-in-One (AIO) image, employing a Linux virtual machine (Hyper-V or VirtualBox), or hosting the server on a Linux Virtual Private Server (VPS). The AIO Docker deployment is presented as the quickest method for users seeking a local Nextcloud instance.
The Nextcloud AIO deployment utilizes a ‘mastercontainer’ to manage Apache, PostgreSQL, Redis, and optional components like Talk and Collabora. Users must configure the `NEXTCLOUD_DATADIR` environment variable to specify a location on the Windows drive for storing user files, as the default Docker volume location is difficult to manage.
