Six German States Adopt Nextcloud for Schools, Replacing Microsoft
Six German states are transitioning to Nextcloud for school collaboration, marking a shift towards open-source alternatives.
A framework agreement has been signed by Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, Hessen, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Rhineland-Palatinate to replace Microsoft solutions with Nextcloud for educational institutions. The move reflects a broader European push for digital sovereignty and access to viable alternatives for public bodies.
IONOS has secured a four-year contract to provide and operate the cloud-based collaboration solution, leveraging Nextcloudâs open-source technology and utilizing data centers within Germany. The agreement allows schools and educational authorities to utilize the solution according to their specific requirements.
The Nextcloud-based solution combines file management, online document collaboration, and communication tools through IONOS Nextcloud Workspace, with the potential for other German states to join the framework agreement.
