Six German States Adopt Nextcloud for Sovereign School Cloud
A new initiative, KoDaS, will provide a Nextcloud-based platform for schools in six German states to enhance digital skills and data sovereignty.
KoDaS, a collaboration and file storage system, is being implemented across Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Rhineland-Palatinate to offer a secure, German-hosted alternative to US-based cloud solutions. The platform utilizes IONOS Nextcloud Workspace, a customized version of the open-source Nextcloud, and will be hosted exclusively in German data centers by IONOS.
The initiative aims to foster digital skills among students and reduce reliance on foreign technology providers, promoting a broader understanding of open-source technologies and their implications. School districts can opt-in and scale usage based on their needs, with the potential for other states to join the program.
Nextcloudâs leadership emphasizes that using open-source platforms like Nextcloud in education can shape students’ technological habits and future decision-making, moving away from dependence on proprietary solutions and fostering digital independence.
