Six German States Build Joint Education Cloud
Six German states are implementing a Nextcloud-based cloud platform for school file management, document editing, and communication.
Six German states, including Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia, are collaborating to create a shared digital workspace for educational institutions using Nextcloud. The initiative, known as KoDaS, is being developed and operated by IONOS, a provider of IT services, and is funded by the Digital School Pact.
The platform, built on Nextcloud Workspace, aims to provide a common digital environment for teachers and students, facilitating file sharing, collaborative document editing, and communication. It emphasizes data sovereignty, relying solely on IONOS’s German data centers and open-source technologies.
A four-year framework agreement allows for flexible usage and expansion, with costs based on the number of active users. The project is intended to enable smaller institutions to access advanced IT services through shared procurement.
