Spain Accelerates Shift Towards Digital Sovereignty with Nextcloud Enterprise Day

Driven by geopolitical concerns and a desire for greater control, Spain is rapidly adopting Nextcloud and open-source solutions to reduce reliance on US-based technology providers.

Nextcloud Enterprise Day Madrid 2026 highlighted a growing movement in Spain towards digital sovereignty, spurred by concerns over US political influence and trade measures. The event brought together over 130 representatives from public administration, education, NGOs, and private companies, including Spain’s largest telecom provider, Telefónica.

Several Spanish regions, including the Basque Country and Madrid, are already implementing open-source platforms like IRADI and EducaMadrid, leveraging Nextcloud for collaboration and data storage within their own infrastructure. These initiatives aim to establish Spain as a European reference for digital sovereignty.

Telefónica emphasized the importance of data control for large organizations, advocating for a strategic approach to AI and cloud adoption based on questions of data protection, access, usage, and legal dependencies. The event underscored a shift from questioning the need for change to focusing on the speed of implementation.
